Resistance to Tapping and Personal Growth

alphonse-mucha“What should I do if I feel resistant to Tapping?”

I usually hear this question from people who have had great success using EFT. The resistance they feel comes from the sudden, powerful realization that they’re actually able to change things within themselves so quickly. You would think this would be GREAT news!

It is! (And it is a bit confronting too).

Resistance Reason 1.   What if’s and Yeah buts…

There seems to be a general fear we all have of becoming too clear, to powerful, and too alive. The best remedy for this fear is to use EFT to tap through those old fears. I recommend making a list of all your “What if”s and Yeah but’s…” listing the worst-case scenarios and limiting thoughts you have about going to the “next level” and becoming, more successful, more healthy, strong, fully capable and truly aligned. Then use EFT to clear the negative charge on the entire list.

Resistance Reason 2.  Accumulated self identity

Often we have defined ourselves by how we have been treated, and what has happened to us. Because effectively clearing emotional pain and trauma is a relatively new art and is only just now, gaining traction as a legitimate possibility, we are used to saying to ourselves “this is just who I am because of how I was raised.” Resistance to using EFT to go to the next level can also be a way of the “personality self” trying to protect its built up self identity. Many people I have tapped with have exclaimed “ I don’t know who I would be without this!” As we grow and mature our “personality self” has to be updated. This causes an opposing effort by the “personality self” to keep things same which can be a heroic effort to re-live the past and maintain your old self identity.

Resistance Reason 3.  It’s impossible

We all grew up with people and a culture who didn’t know how to clear the emotional scars that life had left them with. It was believed, (because it was true then) that it takes a lot of time to get over things and that many times you never recover completely. It is been generally accepted that emotional recovery is temporary or just impossible at worst, or tremendously difficult. We often give up trying to address attitudes we have about our selves or heal incidents that have negatively impacted us along the way. It’s understandable how we became accustomed to believing that we are all products of our pasts, however, it is not the actually truth any more.

Resistance Reason 4.  Safety

Another thing to be aware of is that each “new level” that we desire to attain comes with its own set of new challenges. Because most of us have already learned to deal with life’s challenges at our present comfort level, we consciously and subconsciously dread what might happen at the next level.

Research on stress has shown that when you’re stressed, up to 70% of the blood drains from the frontal lobes of your brain, dramatically reducing your ability to reason or think clearly and virtually shutting down the digestive, reproductive, and immune systems and by sending blood from the brain’s frontal lobes to the chest and limbs for confrontation or escape. Facing your fears head-on and ahead of time (if possible) clears the path for swifter success and greater thinking capacity.

It also keeps us from manifesting our secret little fears and parents old patterns. Thus tapping on your fears protects us from sabotaging ourselves out of achieving and maintaining life at the next level.

The personality self only knows where it’s been in the past and often fears future unknown variables. It’s default its set on “keeping you safe.” But is it really safe to play small aching all the while to give your gifts to the world? Is it really safe to do only what you have already done over and over while getting more and more bored, discontent and disconcerted from the thrill of living life? Is there really any safety to be had in refusing to let our purpose unfold and watching someone else ignite theirs?

If you answered no to any of these questions then becomes your job, to tap out that fear, and choose how to you want to reset your personal preferences.

When we release the fears and limiting beliefs of our old conditioning (which EFT is highly effective for helping us all do) going to the “next level” feels much safer, and even exciting! Our brains instantly light up, true genius switches on and the logic or creativity we need becomes available, offering us clarity and innovative approaches to making our goals a reality.

As you tap on your resistance to using tapping, watching yourself go for it in your life, will become the new normal for you.
